The Supermarine Aircraft Mk26B — a modern, amateur-built aircraft inspired by the legendary Spitfire. On static display as well as flying a multitude of flypasts at this year's Wings on the Warrego.

The original Supermarine Spitfire became a symbol of courage, determination and innovation during the Second World War. With its graceful elliptical wings and exceptional performance, it played a pivotal role in defending Britain during the Battle of Britain and went on to serve in almost every theatre of the war.

Designed by the brilliant engineer Reginald Mitchell, the Spitfire continually evolved throughout the conflict. More than 20,000 examples were built, powered by the famous Rolls-Royce Merlin and later Griffon engines, making it one of the most successful fighter aircraft in history.

While this isn't an original wartime Spitfire, it captures the unmistakable look and much of the flying character that has made the type so admired for generations.

The Mk26B was developed in South Africa by Supermarine Aircraft as a modern interpretation of the classic fighter. Built at approximately eighty percent of the size of the original, it combines the iconic Spitfire silhouette with modern construction techniques, contemporary systems and the reliability of a modern aircraft engine. The result is an aircraft that allows pilots and audiences alike to experience the elegance and handling qualities that made the original famous.
