North American T-28D Trojan

At first glance, the T-28 may look like a fighter — and in many ways, it is. Originally designed in the early 1950s as an advanced military trainer for the United States Air Force, the Trojan quickly earned a reputation as one of the finest piston-engine trainers ever built. Many pilots who went on to fly jet fighters first mastered their skills in aircraft just like this.

VH-ZUC began life as a T-28A before being converted into the more powerful AT-28D configuration. These aircraft later saw operational service in Southeast Asia, where they were adapted for counter-insurgency missions, carrying rockets, bombs and machine guns in addition to their training role. VH-ZUC itself was later recovered from Laos before being painstakingly restored to flying condition in Australia.

Powering this magnificent aircraft is the legendary Wright R-1820 Cyclone radial engine, producing well over 1,400 horsepower. The T-28 has an unmistakable roar of nine cylinders driving a large constant-speed propeller — a sound that captures the golden age of military aviation.

Although capable of impressive performance, this year's display highlights the Trojan's superb handling qualities, showing the balance, stability and precision that made the T-28 such an outstanding military trainer.

Despite weighing more than four tonnes, the Trojan handles with remarkable agility. Its responsive controls and powerful engine gave student pilots an excellent introduction to the high-performance fighters they would eventually fly.

The aircraft's broad wings, bubble canopy and muscular stance give it an unmistakable presence in the sky. Even during gentle manoeuvres, it's easy to appreciate why the T-28 remains one of the world's most admired classic warbirds.
