Boeing Stearman VH-SNM

The Boeing Stearman became the primary trainer for the United States military during the Second World War. More than 10,000 were built, and for thousands of young men and women this was the aircraft in which they first learned the skills that would carry them on to fighters, bombers and transport aircraft.

Today, more than eighty years later, the Stearman remains one of the most recognisable biplanes in the world, with its timeless lines, open cockpits and unmistakable radial engine.

Powering the Boeing Stearman is a 275-horsepower Jacobs radial engine. Listen to its deep, distinctive note as the aircraft is put through a fantastic aerobatic handling display this September at Wings on the Warrego. Unlike many modern engines, the Jacobs is air-cooled, with seven large cylinders arranged in a circle, producing that characteristic rumble loved by warbird enthusiasts around the world.

Imagine sitting in the open cockpit with nothing between you and the slipstream. There is no cabin, no air conditioning and very little instrumentation by modern standards. Flying a Stearman is a pure flying experience, relying on sight, sound and feel.
